Alternative Engagement Rings

The ring that's unmistakably, undeniably you.

If you've been scrolling and none of it feels right — too traditional, too expected, too much like everyone else's — you're probably looking for an alternative engagement ring. And that's exactly what we do.

Marrow Fine has been designing alternative engagement rings since 2016, when founder Jillian Sassone started making jewelry for people who wanted something that told a real story. Not the default. Not whatever the mall was pushing. Something with a stone that speaks to you, a setting that was actually designed rather than templated, a ring you'll still be obsessed with in 30 years.

Here's what "alternative" looks like in our world:

Colored Gemstone Engagement Rings

A sapphire. An emerald. An opal with that watery, otherworldly depth. A vivid teal tourmaline or a blush morganite. Not every love story starts with a white diamond — and not every ring should either. We source unusual colored stones from around the world, and each one gets a setting designed with the same care we give our diamond pieces. Sometimes even more, because the right stone deserves exactly the right frame.

Antique & Old Mine Cut Diamonds

These are diamonds cut by hand, over a century ago — before lasers and precision machines existed. The result is a stone with soft, pillowy facets, a slight asymmetry that modern cuts don't have, and a warmth in candlelight that no GIA brilliant can quite replicate. Old mine cuts have a soul to them. If you want a diamond that feels like it carries history, this is it. We carry genuine antique stones as well as lab-created old mine cuts for those who want that aesthetic with a lighter footprint.

The Toi et Moi

Two stones, side by side. Historically a symbol of two people becoming one — which, for an engagement ring, is a pretty perfect concept. Our Inez Toi et Moi pairs two different shapes in a setting that feels romantic without being fussy. The Chloe Toi et Moi uses a combination of bezel and prong settings so each stone has its own moment.

Sculptural and Non-traditional Settings

How a stone is held changes everything about it. The Abstract Bezel Oval Engagement Ring — one of Jillian's picks and honestly one of our most-loved designs — cradles its center stone in a fluid, organic bezel that feels modern and a little sculptural. The Roxy Bezeled Emerald Cut goes full bezel, east/west, low-profile and architectural. The Joanie Bypass Ring wraps two diamond-set bands around the finger in opposite directions, like movement captured in gold. The Noa Petals surrounds its center stone with layered diamond clusters shaped like petals — organic, romantic, unlike anything you'll find in a traditional jewelry store.

The Dyllan Bombe Engagement Ring Marrow Fine

The Dyllan Bombe

Honestly, this one is its own category. A domed, dimensional setting that plays with volume in a way that flat settings simply can't. It's one of those pieces where people stop you to ask about it.

Why shop alternative engagement rings at Marrow Fine?

We're an independent jewelry house — not a chain, not a franchise. Every design comes from Jillian's studio, which means there's a real point of view behind everything we make. We work with ethically sourced stones, reclaimed gold, and a small group of family-owned suppliers who keep their supply chain transparent. And if you've been collecting inspiration for years and still haven't found your ring anywhere? That's what our custom design process is for.

Come find us in San Diego or Newport Beach, or book a virtual appointment from wherever you are. We'd love to help.
